Prepare for possible power shutoffs

Knowing what to expect when it’s time for a shutoff or evacuation provides a sense of calm during a stressful situation. There are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare and assemble the right supplies.

Steps to prepare for possible power shutoffs

Create an Action Plan for a shutoff or evacuation and share it with your family and neighbors. Remember that during a wildfire, internet and cell service can be overloaded, so it’s important that those closest to you know your plans ahead of time. Designate more than one evacuation route—a plan “A” and a plan “B” in case one is blocked. Also decide ahead of time who will grab belongings and pets. Identify where must-have items are located – such as passports and important documents – and include their location in your action plan. Remember, if there’s a PSPS and power is shut off, that is meant to prevent a fire. There is a chance a shutoff is the only thing that will happen and that is a good thing. It takes time to safely re-energize after a shutoff so build that waiting time into your action plan.

Another important step to preparing is creating an Emergency Kit. Take a look at the list below—most of these items can be found at the grocery store.

  • Face masks
  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • Flashlight
  • Map
  • Pet food
  • Extra clothing
  • First aid kit
  • Copies of important documents like birth certificates, passports, written phone numbers and others

This list is just a start. You know your family, property, and neighborhood best, taking the time to create a kit now will bring you peace of mind in the event of a wildfire.

Another great way to be prepared is to sign up to receive public safety and severe weather alerts. This will alert you when the risk of wildfire is high. You will receive a notification from the National Weather Service to keep you informed about the next step to take.

In the event of a PSPS, Lane may attempt to contact you. As you get wildfire ready, now is the perfect time to log in to your account and make sure your contact information is up to date.
